Cheltenham Restaurants Reviews

I can heartily recommend two restaurants in the Mediterranean style, bot situated in Cheltenham town centre. They may not be the most exclusive and expensive venues, but this in no way excludes them from being a great place to eat.

Grille

Grille is situated in Winchcombe Street close to the old Odeon Cinema. Run by a friendly Turkish owner I always feel as if I've temporarily escaped from England when I go there (though the open fire in winter isn't typical - but still nice!)

The food is always fresh and cooked to perfection. At lunchtime you can enjoy a modest three course meal for only £5.50, whilst evenings are best reserved for spoiling yourself from the wider menu. I had a delicious boiled lamb meal which I thoroughly enjoyed - despite the fact I didn't realise it was boiled when I ordered it - taught me to abandon frying!

Meals are always accompanied by a slab of delicious bread, tasting home baked and always tempting me to eat too much. Afterwards you can enjoy a genuine Turkish coffee and are given Turkish Delight when you are leaving.

Meze Bar

I'm slightly embarrased as I can't remember the exact name of this establishment, a few doors down from the old Colosseum Cinema (is there a trend here?) It's run again by Turkish proprietors who grill the food openly in the restaurant as a delightful authentic touch.

Lookout for the aubergine and zuchini starter, it's subtle flavours will teach you that western food is over sauced and rarely opens your palette to what ingredients actually taste of. Surprisingly, I would have to say their steak and chips is also first class, proving that nobody grills like the Turks.

There is always something interesting music wise playing, but the atmosphere doesn't quite beat that of Grille, though many will prefer its polished, clean feel. I had an amazing Turkish wine on my first visit, with subtle tastes of Mediterranean fruit but alas, I haven't been able to get it subsequently - being forced to enjoy Australian!

Postscript: The restaurant was called Angora, but sadly it's closed now following a problem with its food storage facilities. Let's hope the two guys make it back!

I would thoroughly recommend both of these Cheltenham Restaurants, both being excellent for a trip that won't break any bank and may give you the chance to delude yourself you're still on holiday for a short while.
